Here is a list of some
of the most commonly requested options on a custom
ghillie suit. You can mix and match any of these to
create the perfect
ghillie suit for you, or come up with something
totally different.
Coverage
Coverage with custom
ghillie suits is generally full body, or back only,
but anything is possible. Arms can be completely
covered, not covered at all, half, or whatever
amount that you want. The same applies to the legs.
Any combination can be put together. You can
even get a ghillie suit with full coverage on the
top and back only on the legs, anything you want,
you get.
Reinforcement
When you want the
ghillie suit to be extra durable, reinforcement can
be applied to target areas, most commonly the chest,
elbows, and knees.
Reinforcement material is 1000 Denier Cordura, and
can be covered with the same camouflage fabric as
your ghillie.
Padding
Expecting rugged
terrain? You may want to consider padding some
areas of your ghillie suit like the chest, knees,
and elbows. I use a 3/8th inch thick high density
rubber-like material to add that extra comfort.
It can be sewn on the inside or outside of the
ghillie suit and can be coupled with the
reinforcement material.
Venting
When operating in very hot climates, such as Iraq,
venting may be a desired option. Typically a large
portion of the back, the top of the boonie, and a
small strip running from the armpit down the sides
is cut out and replaced with mesh netting. (the
photo is of the back netting that is tacked into
place before being fully sewn in)
Thumb Loops and Boot
Straps
Prevents the sleeves and pant legs of your suit from
‘riding up’ on you. Here, elastic is sewn into the
cuffs and the bottom of the leg, although other
options can be done.
